Our Morning Skincare Routine

Here’s a little peek at our morning skincare routine and our favorite products. One of us has normal to dry skin, while the other has oily skin with some sensitive areas. So there is sure to be something here for you!

If you have a product you can’t live without, tell us in the comments. Friends need to share the good stuff with each other!

Taking care of your skin is an important part of your everyday routine. After all it is the largest organ in your body. My relationship with skincare began in the 80s when my mom gave me a little, yellow, square sample of Clinique moisturizer. And from there I have grown to love the process (and the products!) that make up my morning skincare favorites.

Bioderma Micellar Water // Facial Toner // Vitamin C Serum // Moisturizer

Pro tip: Use an old glass candle jar to hold cotton pads, cotton balls or q-tips – great way to repurpose something that’s too pretty to throw away.

My skin type is normal to dry. When looking for new products (I am easily influenced!) I look for recommendations from people who’s skin is similar to mine (age, texture, sun damage) and people with amazing looking skin. I’ve been known to ask a stranger what moisturizer they use. I know, some of it is DNA, but I really believe that certain products can make a big difference. Here is my current morning skincare routine.

Bioderma Micellar Water : First thing in the morning I wipe my face with micellar water, using a cotton pad. This gets any residue off of my face without stripping it.

Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner : Second step, I spray my face with a toner. Currently this one is in rotation, I’m not married to it – they all seem the same to me. I like using a toner, first of all it feels super refreshing and it temporarily makes my skin feel tight (in a good way), but most importantly, toners minimizes the size of pores!

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic : Third step is Vitamin C, this helps skin that is sun damaged and has fine lines due to aging. It also protects the skin from free radicals (aka pollution). Sephora has a good primer on Vitamin C and how/why to use it. I have been using this SkinCeuticals brand and so far I like it, but there are Vitamin C serums for every price point.

SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Repair Moisturizer : Last step in the morning is moisturizer. I’m currently using this big boy, it’s plumping and super moisturizing for my aging, dry, winter skin. I will switch to something lighter as we transition into spring.

My skin is generally very oily, with some sensitive areas. When purchasing something new, I look for products that are oil-free, non-greasy, and light. I also don’t like anything complicated and like to keep my routine simple. These are the products I currently use in the morning.

EltaMD Foaming Facial Cleanser : I love how light and fresh this cleanser feels. Because I have oily skin, I feel like this keeps me from getting extra oily during the day. And because my skin is also sensitive, this does not irritate or increase the redness.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Dark Spots Serum : This is the first thing I apply after cleansing to help minimize existing spots. The IT Cosmetics site says it takes about 8 weeks to notice more even skin tone, so be patient.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer : My skin feels amazing all day with this moisturizer. It’s very light, no weird scent (scent can be an issue for me!), and helps control the oil all day.

First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Eye Cream : I really liked this brand’s moisturizer so decided to try their eye cream, too. It’s also very light and non-greasy. Helps with all the critical concerns – dark circles, fine lines, dryness, anti-aging, uneven tone, elasticity. Not sure how much more I can say about an eye cream!

Smashbox Photo Finish Smooth & Blur Oil-free Foundation Primer : This is the last step before any makeup. I love this stuff. It’s light, doesn’t make me oily, and gives my skin a silky smooth finish ready for foundation.

EltaMD UV Facial Moisturizing Sunscreen : I apply this every morning as soon as I wake up (if I am not showering right away – which is most mornings). This gives my skin extra protection from the sun. My foundation has uv protection in it, so I don’t usually apply this under my makeup. I selected this brand after my dermatologist recommended it. Like everything else, this is light/not thick, goes on evenly and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy.

One of my favorite morning products is for the hair, not the skin. If you have thin oily hair this is a must. It dries up the oil and gives your hair volume. It’s Bumble & Bumble Pret. A. $27.00 on Amazon.
