Walk and Talk (and Spring Trends)
It’s time for blog research to check out the spring trends. Let’s go to the mall!
We did a little “research” (shopping and lunch may have been part of it, but no singing or dancing!), and this week’s conversation is all about the spring trends we saw throughout the stores. Here are six spring trends that we’re definitely excited about. Which spring trends are you adding?
If you’re adding some color, pick green or lavender!
CHRISTA : The spring trends are definitely more colorful. If you’re picking one or two colors to update your clothes or accessories, green (any shade!) and lavender are dominating right now. These are two popular colors for spring home decor, too.
Florals are blooming!
MEGAN : Florals are tough for petite girls (I’m 5’1). They can overpower small frames. The spring trends we saw at the mall say that florals are here to stay. If florals scare you too, check out smaller prints — like Liberty, more of a graphic floral pattern or tonal flowers (flowers all in the same color palette). Or try adding florals to your accessories, like a scarf or tote.
Utility Jackets Are Here to Stay
CHRISTA : Utility jackets are back (did they ever leave?) and we’re happy. A utility jacket is a perfect multi-season staple for your closet that you’ll get a lot of wear from. Pair it with jeans, skirts and casual dresses. Add a scarf and layer it for these crazy spring weather days. For something different, choose an unexpected color, like pink. Otherwise, the classic army green is always in style.
Choose wider legs over skinnies
MEGAN : Don’t worry, skinny jeans aren’t gone. If they work for your body type, wear them! For any new adds to our closets we are choosing straight leg, cropped kick flare and boot cut. (If you’re stuck on your skinnies, try a slim straight cut to ease yourself away from them.) So many choices these days, aren’t we lucky! There is something for everyone and we each get to choose what that is.
Take a Denim Break with Chino Pants
CHRISTA : Take a break from your everyday denim with a pair of chinos. We saw chino pants in all the stores, and they come in so many colors, lengths and leg shapes. Pro tip: Beware of the pleats! We did see many options with pleats (narrow and far apart)., but we find that flat front (no pleats) are the most flattering.
More Dresses, Less Skirts
MEGAN : Is the slip skirt trend going away? Probably not, but we saw many more dresses (including slip dresses with sweaters, oxford shirts and tees over them) among this year’s spring trends. Our favorite dresses were the modern shirt dress and pretty day dresses. You can’t beat “one and done” dressing!
What We’re Watching
Just a reminder, today is the day Daisy Jones & the Six releases on Amazon! Our Friday just got a lot more fun.
CHRISTA : Loved In the Dark (on Netflix)! It’s about a blind woman Murphy Mason (played by Perry Mattfeld who you might know from Shameless) who gets tangled up in Chicago’s drug scene when she tries to find out the truth behind a friend’s murder. This show sucked me in and I’m not ashamed to admit how quickly I binged four seasons of it! Netflix, please pick it up for another season, ppppppplease!
MEGAN : Season 3 of Outer Banks (Netflix) came out last week and my teenager and I quickly binged it. Good mother/son/teenager show and bonus points if you like a treasure hunt. I’m still trying to get my head around how they have a 30 year old man playing an 18 year old.
What We’re Shopping For
CHRISTA : If refreshing your home sounds like more fun than refreshing your closet, then this one’s for you — affordable spring decorating finds from Amazon. Add some greenery in pretty vases on your console tables or kitchen island, change out your pillow covers for a lighter color, find something springy for the front door, and you’re all set
I have the eucalyptus stems throughout my house in various vases (shown here) and the white tulips (shown here) — they make every space feel fresh. Not sure what size stems to buy for your vase? Well, I googled it for you and here’s the official rule for the proper stem-to-vase ratio:
“The rule of thumb for traditional arrangements is that the length of the flower stems should be no more than one and a half to two times the height of a vase.”
Use that guideline when you’re shopping online so you’ll always have the perfect vase filler – and if the stems are a smidge too long, just bend the ends. No one will know!
Pro tip: Pillow covers are an easy way to change your decor seasonally. The linked pillows come in 24 colors and 7 sizes. For a sofa, I recommend 22″ pillows and if is generally recommended to size up 2″ for the pillow inserts.

What We’re Reading
CHRISTA : When we find something good, like this informative and thought-provoking article in The New York Times about menopause treatments, we’ll definitely share with you. This article has some great information to help you with your healthcare decisions, but please remember we aren’t doctors. If you think something here will help, review the information with your doctor. Just consider us the friends passing along something interesting we thought you might like. p.s. Feel free to share your interesting articles with us, too. If we think they’ll help the SaF community, we’ll be sure to pass them along in the blog.
What We’re Eating
MEGAN : A few weeks ago I read Black Cake for my book club. Last night we had our meeting and I was the host. I decided to try to make THE black cake, woooooof it was a little harder than I anticipated. I used a combo of several recipes, the one in the back of the book (which is more of a guide), this one from the NYT and this one from Food 52. The 6 cups of booze soaked fruit made me apprehensive (I soaked mine for 2 weeks – the book suggests 6 months), but you know what? My club liked it. The book was good, I recommend it and why not celebrate by baking it’s namesake cake? I also served Chicken Marbella and a salad. The recipe can be found here.
Something Just For Fun
MEGAN : Since I was hosting my book club this week, I made a couple of flower arrangements. I thought I’d share a few tips and tricks with you. Years ago, like maybe 25 years, a girl I knew was a real estate agent in a posh neighborhood in Connecticut. She told me the “realtor” secret was to use different types, but all the same color flowers, keep it low and tight and add a pop of texture at the end. I spent $35 at Trader Joes (they have the best selection and price on cut flowers) and here is what I came up with.
Something to Gift (That They’ll Love!)
CHRISTA : Bookmark this for Mother’s Day. Also perfect for a friend’s birthday. Not sure what scent your mom or BFF likes? Create a selection of six Voluspa tiny tin candles. It’s a perfect gift idea, with six scents for them to sample. Or, buy one for yourself to try out some new scents. Only $24. Also available in a 3 pack of tiny tins ($15) or 3 pack of mini tins ($36).
Friends Share the Good Stuff
Our stylish friend Annamaria joined us for a chilly walk around the lake. Annamaria is playing along and sharing some of her faves for us this week. Fun fact: Annamaria was Megan’s son’s pre-school teacher 16 years ago! And she’s been friends with Christa since about 2005!
#friendssharethegoodstuff
We love when our friends share good stuff with us, so here are some of Annamaria’s favorites.
What I’m watching: We are into Korean shows on Netflix. Extraordinary Attorney Woo is about an autistic 27-year-old lawyer. Due to her high IQ of 164, impressive memory, and creative thought process, the brilliant Woo Young Woo graduated at the top of her class from a prestigious law school.
What I’m reading: Just finished West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. Also read I Am Travelling Alone by Samuel Bjork. It is a book you can’t put down. Also reading, Read This to Get Smarter by Blair Imani.
What I’m wearing to walk: My slip on Skechers. Headphones to listen to podcasts, some in English some in Hungarian on current economical and political situations in Europe.
What I’m shopping for: Trader Joe’s sunscreen, oil free, also all their rose water products.
What I’m looking forward to: I am looking forward to starting my veggie garden, with the weather so mild I might get an early start. I order my seeds from a website Seed Savers Exchange. SSE, is a non-profit organization based near Decorah, Iowa, that preserves heirloom plant varieties through regeneration, distribution and seed exchange. It is one of the largest nongovernmental seed banks in the United States.
A little more about me: I am in two different Zumba classes, Zumba toning (with Zumba sticks) and Zumba fitness which is fast paced fun dancing. It boosts up my mood. I am traveling to Vancouver and Miami next month, both places have a lot I like, snow, sunshine, and great food. Probably everybody learned that by now to take only a carry on, not checking bags. I have seen whole airports flooded with luggage waiting to be picked up or transferred last summer.
