welcome to the weekly walk and talk

Welcome to the Walk and Talk! Every week, we’re sharing our favorite finds—great books, binge-worthy shows, cute shopping picks, and all the little things that make life over 50 feel good. Think of it as your weekly walk with friends who always have something fun (and useful) to share. So glad you’re here!

What We’re Watching

MEGAN : Department Q on Netflix is a classic British crime series. Matthew Goode leads the show as the detective inspector in charge of the cold case division. Two mysteries set in Edinburgh will have you binging all nine episodes to find out what whodunit. Fun fact: Dept. Q was made by the same writer/director as The Queen’s Gambit.

CHRISTA : Megan shared her thoughts on Sirens (Netflix) last week—now it’s my turn. This six-episode limited series is an easy weekend binge. The plot’s a bit predictable, but the cast—Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Julianne Moore, and Kevin Bacon—makes it worth the watch.

What We’re Wearing

CHRISTA : Every season is slip skirt season—it’s truly a year-round favorite! In summer, it’s especially handy: wear it with a tee and sneakers for errands, a tank for date night, or throw it on over your swimsuit as an easy poolside cover-up. Not sure if it’s your style? Try this fun $37 Amazon find (a great FARM Rio lookalike). And yes—it’s 95% polyester, but when you look this cute, who’s checking the tag?

MEGAN : I was in Athleta last week picking up some new walk and talk leggings and found this GEM on the sale rack. It’s a one and done, casual every day outfit that’s NOT a dress. I’ve washed it and put it in the dryer (by mistake) and it had no issues. Not a wrinkle to be found. Super comfortable. It is on sale for $40 and fully stocked in tall, regular and petite. I’ve 5’1 and I’m in the regular large. I think the petite would have been too short in the rise even on me.

What We’re Loving (and Think You Might Too!)

MEGAN : I’m a sucker for a charm and the fish charms that are everywhere this summer are no exception. Perfect way to embrace the “fisherman” trend without going overboard. Here are the ones I purchased and a few others that caught my eye.

Mini Style Fix: Casual Summer Dresses

Mini Style Fix is your stylish bestie whispering, “Wear this, you’ll look fabulous”—these bite-sized posts are fast, fun, and totally doable.

MEGAN : I was at the mall last week (shocker, I know!), and I passed a very chic woman. She was about my age and was wearing a stunning and simple linen a-line dress. Seriously, the elegant simplicity of this dress stopped me in my tracks. After a bit of google research I found two versions of THE dress, one from DISSH in Australia and a look for less from Amazon. I ordered them both (for research purposes of course!). First one arrives early next week.

CHRISTA : Summer dresses are my warm-weather go-to, and this under $30 Amazon find is a favorite—cute, comfy, and it even came to Greece with me! Back again this season in 14 colors, sizes S–XXL, and yes, it has pockets.

Style tip: Pair with white sneakers and a fun tote for easy daytime exploring!

Reader Request: Dorm Room Must-Haves

CHRISTA : The key to a small dorm room? Plan ahead and stay organized. My favorite source for smart storage finds is always The Container Store. Both of my kids used these 5 essentials—and they worked just as well in their first apartments, too.

  • 3-tier rolling cart : Great by the bed or desk—for study supplies, snacks, or a bedtime routine kit.
  • Elfa fridge cart: Mini fridge on top, drawers below for snacks, plates–or use it for the printer + school supplies.
  • 3M Command hooks: stock up! Use them on doors for coats, bed ends for backpacks, or bathroom walls for robes/towels.
  • Folding hutch: No desk hutch? No problem. This folding version is easy to transport to school, and adds vertical storage in seconds.
  • Rolling drawers: Maximize under-the-bed space—but check height first!

Shop Christa’s Dorm Picks

MEGAN : Dorm room essentials from Amazon. These are all items my college son owns and loves. He’s lived in a dorm and an off campus apartment and continues to use ALL of these items. Cost per use is pennies now. Everyone of these items have held up and are still in use (2 years in), even the laundry basket!

  • Cushion Headboard: This cushioned headboard is one of my son’s favorite things. He propped it up on his bottom bunk to keep from hitting his head on the metal bed frame. The cover comes off and is washable.
  • Personal Fan: Some dorms aren’t air conditioned and even if they are you can’t control the temps.
  • IKEA Bags: The #1 essential for college kids are the IKEA (like) bags. We write what’s in them in Sharpie. Easy to store and stash under the bed and they hold A LOT.
  • Laundry Basket: My son loves this collapsable laundry basket. It hold a ton of clothes. He keeps his laundry supplies right in the basket and it fits nicely on the floor of the closet.
  • Air Purifier: Dorms, college apartments, fraternity houses are ALL petrie dishes. The kids are going to get sick but this helps. Pro tip: Order extra filters and leave them in the top of their closet.
