Your assignment: Using our wardrobe checklist, head into your closet and identify your spring essentials! Do they fit well? Are you in love with them? Are they in good repair (nothing needs a hem or button)? If you answered no to any of that, then we can help! You can use our recommendations in this post to make your shopping a breeze and fill in the gaps in your wardrobe.

Note: You loved this post in 2024, so we’ve updated it for 2025 with new links, fresh ideas and the latest trends!

Denim and Pants

MEGAN: Spring means my white jeans are back in rotation. As a curvy, short (5’1) girl the JCrew petite denim fits me best. I have had both pairs of these white jeans for several years – they are my go to. Switch out your dark denim for a lighter wash in the spring. Another essential, especially for the transitional spring weather, is a pair of army green chinos. They go with everything!

CHRISTA: As the seasons change, I swap my jeans for white denim (no need to wait for Memorial Day!). Try navy instead of black as a new neutral, or brighten up with a lighter wash denim or fun spring color. These pink pants from Anthropologie are the perfect spring piece, not too heavy and just the right color!

Blouses and T-shirts

MEGAN: The ultimate spring (year round, honestly) essential is a button down shirt. White, blue, striped…whatever suits you. Dress it up, wear as a cover up, or as an actual top. A true closet hero. Spring is my favorite time to break out my denim shirt. Wear it as a layering piece over a tee. I’m including my current favorite white tee in this line up, a white tee shirt is truly a basic essential. This one from COS is nice and thick.

Size tip for COS white tee: Don’t put it in the dryer unless you want it to shrink a little, or buy one size up.

CHRISTA: Every closet needs a white blouse, a black top, and a classic white tee—versatile staples that layer effortlessly. Still searching for the perfect tee? This one from J.Jill is thick and flattering, while the Boden tee below has great detail. I also added a pink blouse for a pop of color–and pink is THE color this spring.

Classic Sweaters

MEGAN: Classic, neutral sweaters are an essential building block of any spring outfit. A neutral cardigan in wool or cashmere is the perfect layer over a tee shirt and jeans. When it warms up tie it over your shoulders. A sweater vest can be worn alone, over a tee or a button down. The petal pink french terry deconstructed blazer is the elevated sweatshirt my closet needs this spring. Adding to my cart.

CHRISTA: I’m loving this season’s colorful sweaters! A cashmere crewneck, playful cardigan, and maybe one neutral option make outfit-building effortless. This floral Rails sweater caught my eye on their pre-spring catalog cover—they effortlessly styled with denim, making it an easy everyday win.

Shoes and Sandals

MEGAN: Spring and shoes can be tricky, but these four (five if you count the two colors of Mary Janes) pairs are the absolute essentials for spring. I prefer a closed toe in spring, the weather is too inconsistant. Mary Janes are this years ballet flat; easy, comfortable and go with dresses, skirts or pants. As you know I’ve been in my Gola era for a while now and I’m OBSESSED with this neutral color. Penny loafers for life. Aerosoles, you have my attention! These suede peep toe platforms are low enough for my over 50 year old self but they are giving me 1940s vibes.

CHRISTA: Early spring calls for shoes and sandals! A neutral ballet flat, fashion sneaker, flat sandal, and heel sandal will take you anywhere. (Of course, I have more than that, but could I do with less? You betcha! But don’t tell my husband!) Consider this your starting point!

Blazers and Jackets

MEGAN: Spring can bring three seasons in one day. These four jackets are the spring essentials that every woman needs in her closet. A quilted “barn jacket” that’s warm, a cropped trench will never go out of style, a long anorak for sporting events and wet walk and talks and my personal favorite a french terry (triple fleece) deconstructed peacoat.

CHRISTA: Early spring is all about layering, and the right jacket makes all the difference. A classic trench is a must for unpredictable weather, but I prefer the look of this shorter “trench inspired” jacket for a more casual look. A denim jacket pairs perfectly with everything from jeans to dresses. And the white jacket below will be your best friend when you travel (trust me!).

Dresses and Skirts

MEGAN: We love a good one and done dress outfit. This modern take on the classic striped tee shirt dress has a *slight* puff shoulder and 3/4 sleeves. Wear with sneakers or flats! I had to include a fancy dress, perfect for a shower or Easter brunch. I think we will be seeing a lot of a-line, midi cotton poplin skirts this spring and summer. Pair with a tee and a cardigan now and a tank later. Dresses always give an elevated casual vibe.

CHRISTA: I can’t wait for dress season! A great dress is a “one-and-done” outfit. The black maxi is travel-friendly, the floral Anthro Somerset flatters everyone, and Avara’s black-and-white dress is ultra-flattering. Plus, a denim skirt pairs effortlessly with essentials!

Finishing Touches for Your Spring Wardrobe Essentials

MEGAN: Spring is the season to lighten things up, put away that black purse, and bring out some color. Adding bronzer to my makeup routine gives me that just back from the Caribbean glow, as does a lighter pink lipstick. A silk and cashmere scarf does double duty, providing warmth and a little pop of color near your face. Don’t forget the sunnies!

CHRISTA: Ahhh, the finishing touches–purses, jewelry, and sunglasses add a little flair to your look, especially during seasonal transitions. A bag in an on-trend color can refresh every outfit, while layered necklaces elevate even the simplest styles. And don’t forget stylish sunglasses—they’re both a fashion statement and a springtime essential! The colorful necklace below is a great option to layer with your favorite gold or silver jewelry for a fun look!
