Protein-Packed Smoothie Recipes for Breakfast (or Any Time!)

There’s no better way to start your day than with a protein packed smoothie, and today we’ve got two easy smoothie recipes for you. Truthfully, you can make a delicious smoothie with anything you have on hand. You just need a cup of liquid (coconut water, cows milk, protein milk, nut milk…the possibilities are endless), something green (celery, kale, spinach, chard), something with a healthy fat (almond butter, avocado) and something sweet (frozen mango, banana, pineapple).

On these hot days there is nothing more refreshing or sustaining than a cold smoothie before walking with a friend. Enjoy!

Megan’s Mean Green Smoothie Recipe

MEGAN : My favorite thing about this smoothie recipe is that is has TONS of spinach in it and you will never know. I make a variation of this almost every morning. The key to making a smoothie is don’t over think it. Use what you’ve got. If the apples are a little mealy, toss them in a smoothie! Spinach too wilted for a salad but still good? Toss it in a smoothie! Making smoothies is also a gateway to getting kids involved in the kitchen. If they make it, they’ll usually eat it. Nothing feels healthier than starting the day with a serving of veggies. Even my kids agree.

This green smoothie will start your day off right with a big serving of veggies! (Don't worry, the kids won't even notice.)
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 minute
Course Breakfast
Servings 4

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond/coconut/cashew milk
  • 2-3 cups baby spinach I use fresh but you could use frozen.
  • 3 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder I use a paleo one
  • 1 cup frozen organic mango Trader Joes for the win!
  • 1 frozen banana

Instructions

  • Toss it all in and blend 'er up!

Notes

Don’t be fooled by the lush green color of this smoothie. It’s creamy and vanilla-y and super yummy. Even my picky eater will drink this one. Pro tip: I tried it out on him the first time in a Yeti with a lid so he couldn’t see the color. When I have them, I sprinkle Hemp hearts on top for a little crunch and extra nutrients. Enjoy!!

Christa’s Chocolate Banana Protein Shake

CHRISTA : Yes, friends, I am sharing a recipe — granted, it’s just a smoothie recipe, but it is proof that I can find my kitchen and it’s the one thing you can guarantee I know how to make! I got this recipe years ago from a personal trainer as a healthier alternative to the pre-made Special K breakfast drinks I was buying. It’s filling and doesn’t leave me feeling bloated. And when I start off the day on a good note with something nutritious like a smoothie, the rest of my eating throughout the day is so much better, too. (And like Megan said, this is a good use for the old bananas! In fact, it tastes even better if the banana is a little over-ripened.)

Fun fact: it’s 3/4 of a banana because my dogs each get the ends of the banana as a treat! LOL!

Love smoothies. I think Megan means one frozen banana, not 1 T, right? My recipe is this: one banana, 1 scoop collagen, 1 heaping tsp. turmeric, 3 tsp chia, 1 heaping tsp almond butter, 3 c mixture spinach/kale, 2″ piece ginger, 1 date, 1 peeled clemtine or other small citrus–sometimes a peach and/or any blueberries/blackberries that I have on hand. With that I have fat free plain yogurt topped with homemade granola. Happy to share the granola recipe. Buon apetito.
