Your front door makes a first impression to all who visit. What does your door say about you and your family? If you just cringed at that question, it might be time for a little refresh! It only takes a few simple changes and a little elbow grease to have a front door that represents you.
Your refresh can be done in 3 easy steps…first add something colorful, then change out your tired door mat, and finally mix in some greenery.
Let’s get started!
Christa’s Front Door
The starting point for our front porch this spring was some front door maintenance because after a long winter, well, it just needs it! A little power washing and we are good to go. This is a good time to evaluate whether you need to repaint your door – remember, first impressions count when someone visits!
STEP ONE :
For some color, I added a hanging basket of flowers on the door. These were an Etsy find and I love the pink against my black door! I also was happy to find something other than a wreath to switch it up this time. I always have a seasonal wreath on the front door, so this is a nice change. Pro tip: The Etsy site I purchased from no longer lists my basket, but here is a very similar one.
STEP TWO :
I feel like my doormat gets faded and spring is the time I usually replace it. I ordered this new one on Grandin Road because I like the simplicity and the larger size (30″ x 48″). Grandin Road had a great assortment of door mats and other outdoor decor for your front entry. (This one was also in the running.)
STEP THREE :
We always have topiaries on each side of the front porch for some year round greenery. I’ll let you in on the trick to keeping them looking fresh and holding their shape – faux topiaries on Amazon. Shhhh, it’s our secret! People comment on them all the time (in a good way!) – they’re always surprised to find out that they’re fake! In a few weeks, I’ll also be adding seasonal flowers to give more pops of color. Pro tip: If your planters are showing some wear, try spray painting them to extend their life another season.
Pro tip: When you add anything to your front door or porch, consider contrasting colors that stand out from the street.
And, voila! Spring has arrived at my house! 🌷🌷
A Few More Tips from Christa
One of the best additions to our front door was the keypad for keyless entry. It is so easy to use. You can even set a temporary code for house/pet sitters, contractors, etc. It’s great for when you’re walking the dog – so easy to lock/unlock the house. And it works with an app to unlock it remotely – no more getting locked out of the house!
You might have also noticed the little hook by our front door. In case you’re wondering, it’s for our dry cleaning. For years we have used the pickup/delivery service from our local cleaners. It’s so convenient, and I encourage you to look into it if you make frequent trips to the dry cleaner!
Megan’s Front Door
The wrap around front porch sold this house to my husband 25 years ago. Originally the front door was painted a dark red and it just never felt right. So a few years ago I ordered some “front door paint” from Amazon and went for it. Voila! My front door is now yellow, like school bus yellow and it makes me super happy. If was very easy and I painted both the storm door and the front door in one afternoon. For under $50 this is the ultimate refresh!
front door paint // faux Jasmin wreath // black and white grosgrain ribbon // faux boxwood balls // front porch light // lanterns // outdoor carpet
STEP ONE :
I look forward to switching out my wreath each season. This year I picked up this faux Jasmin wreath at Target and added a long black and white grosgrain ribbon.
STEP TWO :
Finding the right doormat has vexed me for years. The front door has a very low rise so a normal doormat won’t fit under the door. Then I had a eureka moment, what about an outdoor carpet as a door mat?? It’s perfect. And since it lives under the front porch I only have to replace it every few years.
STEP THREE :
One of my favorite things on my front porch are the faux boxwood balls. I spray painted some planters black and stuck the boxwood balls in them. Pro tip: If the balls are wobbly in the planter use pine cones to “fill” the sides so it doesn’t tip. I added battery powered white lights on a timer to the box woods and it gives all the fancy hotel vibes. (I haven’t had to change the batteries since Christmas! The lights come on at sunset and turn off at midnight.) The lanterns I picked up at Target, they have battery powered candles in them that are also set to go on and off with the boxwoods. It lights a nice path to the front door in the dark. Pro tip: Quickest bang for your buck, a can of spray paint can update anything!
A Few More Tips from Megan
I recently updated my front porch light, after lots and lots of searching I settled on these from Ballard Design. I really love the way they look and apparently so do the local birds, because they have a nest with babies tucked behind the sconce.
A few more tips, an American flag is always a welcome addition to any front door. The pillows on my front porch are from Walmart, the quality is amazing for the price. Highly recommend.
