The Benefits of Organizing When You’re Over 50
We love a good organized space or system! Organizing isn’t just for big families with tons of stuff—it’s a total game-changer for empty nesters too! This phase of life often comes with big shifts, like the kids moving out, retirement, or maybe even downsizing. Taking a little time to declutter and tidy up can do wonders. It’s not just about reducing stress—it’s also a great way to rediscover forgotten treasures and create a space that feels perfect for where you are in life now. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about making your home work for you.
Boost Your Mood
On top of that, getting organized can seriously boost your mood. A clean, uncluttered space has a way of making everything feel a little easier and more peaceful. It’s like a mental refresh button! Clearing out old stuff can even open up space (literally and figuratively) for new adventures. And let’s be real—an organized home is safer, easier to maintain, and just makes life smoother as we get older. Whether you’re tackling sentimental keepsakes or just making sure your important papers are easy to grab, a little effort goes a long way toward a happier, more purposeful life.
What’s one space you can organize today?
Start small—like a single drawer or the cabinet under the sink—and it’s totally doable. Bonus tip: Next time you’re chatting with a friend on a walk, ask about her best organizing hacks. Friends always have the best ideas…and #friendssharethegoodstuff!
What We’re Wearing
CHRISTA : These wintery days call for waterproof boots (which, fyi, are very comfy!) and cozy sweaters. I have so many sweaters, but the one I grab the most? This gem from Target–only $20! Style it with denim, boots and a puffer vest for an easy winter OOTD. The sweater does run a bit big, so consider sizing down. Available in sizes XS-4X. My oatmeal shade is selling out in many sizes, but the camel/black stripe is a great alternative! I also found some similar options that are just as cute and linked them below.

MEGAN : I want to wear sweats every day, all day. But some days that’s not an option, so I’ve adopted the over 50 elevated athleisure as my new persona. Every item I’m wearing is ON SALE for under $100. I’ve owned all of these basics for at least a year. Whoever said “invest in good basics” might be on to something. My favorite is this cashmere hoodie from Nordstrom. Under $100.

What We’re Shopping For
MEGAN : Everyone loves Valentine jammies. Can you believe that some of these are UNDER $20? Nothing says true love like soft, warm pajamas – like a virtual hug. Send a pair to your daughter that’s away at college or treat your bestie to some heart shaped pjs. I promise they will last longer than a chocolate bar. Don’t forget a gripper slipper to complete the look.
CHRISTA : If you’re shopping for organization solutions, I recommend Elfa’s selection of predesigned systems at The Container Store. This Over-the-Door Gift Wrap Organizer is my favorite! It’s great if you’re short on space because it uses the back of the door. You can move all the baskets around and create a solution that works for you. Try it on your guest room closet, or start using the space in your kids’ rooms if they’ve finally moved out. Plus, if your future plans include a down-size or move, this comes with you because it’s not permanently attached.
There is also this Gift Wrap Center. The drawers are great for bows, ribbon and tags, as well as gift bags, your “extra gift stash” and more. And rolls of wrap easily store on the side. Just roll it out when you’re ready to wrap, and the top becomes your work surface. I have this one, too, and wheel it out for the holidays to create a gift wrap station in my office.
What’s the Best Way to Declutter?
CHRISTA : You’ll save money when you declutter and organize so you can see what you have. And, it’s easy when you go one drawer at a time. Start with the makeup drawer! First things first—get rid of the old stuff. (Vogue has an awesome article on how to know when your makeup’s expired.) While you’re at it, say goodbye to duplicates, shades you never wear, and those products that just didn’t work for you.
I keep all my makeup in a drawer, and using this spice organizer was a total game-changer! Now, everything fits perfectly, and I can actually see what I have. It’s cut down on waste since nothing gets lost at the bottom of a makeup bag. So worth it! And for a list of our favorite makeup products, check out this post.
MEGAN : Nothing makes me smile more than when someone opens this drawer in my kitchen and says, “Woah! You are really organized.”. Because the reality is, I’m not. BUT these clever little drawer inserts sure make me look like I am.
What We’re Watching
MEGAN : We went to the movie theater and saw, A Complete Unknown. Two hours and twenty minutes and I never looked at my watch once. Timothee Chalamet sang over 50 songs, ah-mazing. (Fun fact – Timothee’s first girlfriend -irl- was Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon!) The movie follows Bob Dylan when he arrived in NYC (1961) to the Newport Folk Festival (1965). From pen palling with Johnny Cash to a love triangle with Joan Baez and a Pulitzer Prize in literature, regardless of your opinion about his voice, Dylan is a musical icon. Worth the ticket price, the music should be heard in Dolby Surround Sound.
CHRISTA : The Substance (Prime Video) is a body horror/dark satire movie starring Golden Globe winner Demi Moore and nominee Margaret Qualley. Demi Moore plays an actress struggling with the realities of aging in Hollywood, and she takes extreme measures to get back a better version of herself and her life. Despite the ridiculous ending, the movie is suspenseful and sometimes grotesque, but in an “I-can’t-look-away” way!
Random Stuff We Like
MEGAN : Truth be told I’m not a very organized person. The one thing I am super organized about is my pill/supplement case. Every Sunday I fill it and love that it’s done for the week, ready to go. I also keep a pocket pharmacy in my purse/makeup bag and it has come in handy COUNTLESS times.
CHRISTA : These Kindle cases from Page are absolutely adorable! Add a little fun to your reading time with these vibrant, mood-boosting “beat-the-winter-blues” colors. It’s also a perfect gift for your book loving friend!
