All About the Skincare We Love | Over 50 Beauty

Today we are spilling the tea all about our skincare tips, techniques and favorite products. We’re talking about those morning and evening routines that make us feel and look like a million bucks. As we age, our bodies change and our skin has different needs. Check out our favorite products for our over 50 skin. From primers and retinols to eye drops and neck creams, we are sharing our tried and true skincare favorites.

Pro tip: Remember to patch test new products before incorporating them into your routine, and if you have any specific skin concerns or conditions, consult with a dermatologist for personalized recommendations.

And a little plug for sunscreen. We should ALL (men, women, children, babies – people of every skintone) be wearing sunscreen year round. UV and UVB rays don’t take the winter off. Fun fact: The correct amount of sunscreen to apply to your whole body is one shot glass full. Now that’s a fact the college kids can relate to. Two completely different skincare routines…something for everyone!

We’ve updated this post for 2025 with fresh links and new products we love that have found their way into our daily routines. Enjoy!

Megan’s Skincare Needs

I love skincare products, I get it from my Dad. My skin has always been pretty normal, but with peri-menopause it’s leaning a bit drier (like everything else!). A true love of products keeps me busy trying new things, so if something sticks around, you can bet it’s REALLY GOOD. It’s also important to note; it’s not just what you put ON your skin, it’s also about making sure you are eating real fruits and veggies and drinking plenty of water.

Taking care of your skin is an important part of your everyday routine, it is your largest organ. My relationship with skincare began in the 80s when my mom gave me a little, yellow, square sample of Clinique moisturizer. And from there I have grown to love the process (and products!) that make up my skincare favorites. Pro tip from our fav aesthetician, Georgi on the Shore: Whatever you do to/put on your face make sure you are also doing that to your neck, chest and tops of hands. Wish I’d known that 30 years ago.

Megan's morning skincare for over 50

First thing in the morning I rinse my face with warm water. This gets rid of any residue without stripping my skin.

Toner: The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner smooths, reduces dark spots and hydrates your skin. It is an exfoliant, but is fine on my sensitive skin.

Serum: I don’t LOVE vitamin C – imo they always smell funny and are sticky. But I read an interview with several dermatologists that said vitamin C is the #1 most important product they recommend. I ran out and bought this one and you know what, I like it. I tested it on my friend (also not a vitamin C lover) and she loved it too. Not sticky, not gross smelling, not breaking the bank.

Moisturizer: I am constantly trying different moisturizers, from all ends of the price spectrum. Currently I’m using Naturium and for under $20 it’s great.

Sunscreen : I always use a mineral based (physical block) photoprotector sunscreen – especially on my face, neck and chest. ISDIN is my current favorite (and on sale for 50% off at Walmart!). Look for one with more than 8% zinc.

Megan’s Evening Routine

Having a bedtime routine is an essential part of my sleep hygiene. By doing the same things each night; brushing my teeth, washing my face, applying all of my (Hail Mary) products and then getting into bed, my body knows it’s time to sleep. Having a consistent routine is essential to getting good rest, looking and feeling refreshed. Like anything in life consistency is key, if you use your magic lotions and potions each night you will see improvement in the quality of your skin. (Oh, and drink lots of water!)

Megan's PM Skincare she loves

Cleanser : This is my fifth tube of The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser. I love this stuff, it foams up on my face and doesn’t burn my sensitive eyes.

Micellar Water: Turns out there is something to the double wash. After I was my face with a face cleanser I always do a swipe of Bioderma and darn if that cotton pad doesn’t ALWAYS show some dirt or makeup that I missed.

Serum : I alternate between the ROC vitamin C Serum (from AM routine) and the Olay Super Serum. No reason to have both other than I’m a product junkie.

Retinol  : I use a prescription retinol. The RX retinol has really improved the texture of my skin – it’s also reduced my fine lines. Pro tip: When they say ONLY USE A PEA SIZE amount, they mean it. Use it every other day until your skin adjusts.

Moisturizer : I always have a “few” tubs of thick moisturizing cream that I use. Currently loving the Eucerin Q10 Face Cream. Dare I say it reminds me of La Mer?

A few bonus items that have become an essential part of my evening routine.

Floss : Cocofloss has changed the flossing game for me. I’ve gone from a girl that only flossed when I ate popcorn to flossing EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT. I love this stuff it’s like a loofa between your teeth.

Eye Care : I had a rough eye infection earlier this year and that experience elevated the importance of eye health in my daily routine. Dry eyes are very common and these Blink tears help for a quick fix but the self heating eye mask helps your eyes from within. Especially the cornea.

Non-Petroleum Jelly : My cuticles got so dry this winter that I was *almost* too embarrassed to get a manicure. The nail tech helpfully suggested (in a very non judgmental way) that I put Vaseline on my cuticles multiple times a day and night. I opted for non-petroleum jelly and man, that stuff is amazing. Literally a huge difference in two days and I’ve only been doing it at night.

Christa’s Skincare Needs

My skin was always oily, but with menopause I am finding that it’s drier, and many products leave it feeling dried out. I also have some sensitive areas and red patches. So when purchasing something new, I look for products that are oil-free, non-greasy, and light. I also don’t like anything complicated and like to keep my routine simple. I’m a creature of habit, so when I find something I love, I stick with it as long as I can (so some of these may already be familiar if you’ve been reading the blog!).

Christa’s Morning Routine

Simple is the name of my skincare game! I spent years getting sucked into trying this product and that product, but finally found a system that works for me — it’s easy to do, and something I can stick with daily. I believe it’s not necessarily the product you’re using, but the consistency with which you use it that makes it effective.

Rothschild Balancing Gel Cleanser : I love this because it’s a very gentle cleanser. Perfect for everyone in your family.

Kiehl’s Better Screen UV Serum : I recently added this sunscreen. I use it every morning as soon as I wake up so I’m protected during my morning walk and talks. I’ll reapply it after I shower later in the day. I like that it’s a lightweight layer underneath makeup, and it includes anti-aging benefits for fine lines.

Colleen Rothschild Vitamin C Brightening Serum : The next step in my process is this Vitamin C serum. It helps for the uneven skin tone we all get as we age.

Colleen Rothschild Sheer Renewal Cream : This oil-free moisturizer is very light and leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth and hydrated. This is a must-have after washing my face or showering. I’ve treied many moisturizers over the years, and keep coming back to this one.

Gold Bond Neck and Chest Firming Cream : Non-greasy, lightly scented, give it about a week of day/night use to notice a difference. Works better than the pricier products.

Colleen Rothschild Illuminating Tinted Eye Cream : Tired eyes? You need this! Brightens, lightens and gives you a refreshed, best-nights-sleep look!

Christa’s Evening Routine

No surprise, I’m keeping the evening routine simple, too. There are more nights than I care to admit where I’m doing this at midnight, half asleep because I fell asleep on the couch watching TV. And, don’t forget, your evening skincare routine is only as good as the rest of your skincare habits–you need a morning routine, plenty of sunscreen and, like Megan said, lots of water.

Colleen Rothschild Radiant Cleansing Balm : This cleansing balm removes makeup, minimizes pores and leaves my skin feeling clean and smooth. Love this stuff! I linked the jumbo size, but they also sell a smaller size and a travel size (if you want to try before you commit). I use it with the included muslin cloth for a little extra exfoliation.

IT Cosmetics Confidence in Your Beauty Sleep Night Cream : This night cream helps with fine lines and wrinkles, and leaves my skin feeling so soft and smooth. It doesn’t transfer to my pillowcase, and the scent is heavenly before bedtime.

Colleen Rothschild Hyaluronic Serum : I like to use this at night to help keep my skin hydrated all night long.

Spa Headband : This is a must-have for washing your face at night.

Colleen Rothschild Muslin Cleansing Cloths : These muslin cloths work perfect in combination with the cleansing balm to gently and effectively cleanse your skin and remove makeup.

Gold Bond Age Renew Crepe Corrector Hand Cream : I like to apply this hand cream at night before bed. Just a thing I do!
