weekly walk and talk

Welcome to the Walk & Talk

Welcome to Walk & Talk, a weekly hangout for women over 50 who love good finds and great outfits. It’s all about easy looks, favorite things, and the kind of recommendations you’d text to a friend.

CHRISTA : Hi friends and happy almost Valentine’s Day. ❤️🩷 Before we jump into this week’s finds, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you. Whether you read every week, follow along on social, share our posts, or send a link to a friend, you’re the reason for Style Among Friends. We truly love doing this for you…finding the good stuff, sharing what we’re loving, and making life a little easier (and more fun) along the way. Thanks for being here, and for “walking and talking” each week.

MEGAN : Anyone else loving all the Olympic coverage? I’m down the rabbit hole of all the fashion (gear and swag!) for each country, the behind the scenes documentaries and just following along on the social media of the athletes. The Olympics have been inspiring me since I was kid and watched Mary Decker fall on the track.

What We’re Watching

MEGAN : I love Miracle on Ice, the 1980 docudrama about the US Hockey team in Lake Placid. Netflix has a new documentary, Miracle: the Boys of 80, about the US team’s experience beating the Russian team for gold. The interviews with the individual players and the coaches kids were amazing. What a story. If you love ESPN 30 for 30s you will enjoy this 90 min documentary.

CHRISTA : I watched Eleanor the Great (Netflix) and couldn’t wait to tell all of you about it here. It’s all about friendship, loss, and how we manage grief, but in a really warm, hopeful way. One of those quiet, heart-tugging movies that sticks with you long after you’ve watched it. The characters are relatable and June Squibb’s performance will have you on an emotional rollercoaster. I really think you’ll love it!

What We’re Wearing

CHRISTA : IT’S STILL COLD. 🥶 And we have lots of snow/ice on the ground (which will hopefully go away soon!). So there’s not a lot of outfit inspiration happening from me! I am getting dressed each day, but the focus is on comfort and warmth while I continue to hibernate!

  • Look 1 – when you find yourself needing to leave the house, cashmere helps you feel put together
  • Look 2 and 3 – nothing beats warm fleece on a cold day and this look-for-less is a great Amazon find at a great price
  • Look 4 – when Mother Nature dumps your area with snow and ice that last for weeks, this is generally what you need! Sorel boots for the win!

Pro tip: When the cold has you hibernating, that calls for some online shopping. Come back next week when I’ll have a roundup of some fun spring styles that I’ve been saving in my carts (and ordering).

MEGAN : Just another casual winter outfit. If you are sick of your bulky sweaters, try layering a turtleneck (or t-neck sweater) under a blazer. Keep it tonal of course! This outfit, paired with jeans, felt a little fancy for a week night dinner with friends.

What We’re Loving

MEGAN : Target for the win. This cordless rechargeable lamp is bringing me a lot of joy. Just think how cute it’s going to be in the summer on my outdoor dining table. Right now she’s found a home in my living room and I love turning her on in the early morning while I have my coffee. I may have gone back and bought two (or three) more.

CHRISTA : I recently stumbled on an article calling brown denim the new neutral, and this is one trend that women over 50 can truly make their own. But it doesn’t need to be denim–could be a pair of ponte knit pants, wide-leg trousers or coated denim. A pair of brown pants works with so much you already have in your closet. Try an all-brown look, pair with red for a rich pop of color on Valentine’s Day, try adding a leopard pattern, or keep it classic with white/cream. It is an easy way to mix things up without feeling trendy for the sake of trendy.

What We’re Styling: For a Night at a Hockey Game

Each week, we share easy outfit ideas inspired by real-life plans and places. Think comfortable, put-together looks you can recreate with what you already own, plus a few fun add-to-cart options if you want to update your closet.

CHRISTA : I love all the lululemon NHL gear (available for men and women). Grab a piece or two and head out to a game. You’ll have so much fun, even if you’re not a huge hockey fan! I’m eyeing up this red scuba half-zip hoodie for the next game!

Style tip: If your arena has a NO bag policy like ours (not even a small clear bag), look for a small phone crossbody. It’s big enough for your phone, some id/cards and your readers!

MEGAN : My husband and I go to a lot of hockey games. Fun fact, my youngest son played hockey for eight years. IMO dressing for warmth is the key to a good night at the ice house. I always wear my sherpa jacket and wool socks. As a woman over 50, jerseys aren’t really my thing but I do like to rep my team with my accessories.

Just for Fun

MEGAN : I’ve been obsessing over Winter Olympics fashion. Vogue shared a great article detailing who designed the outfits for each country. Mongolia is my favorite, what’s yours?

CHRISTA : It’s time for February’s Closet Tip, and this month is all about a simple sweater reset. I like to pull all my sweaters off the shelves mid-season, refold them, and re-stack them. It’s a good reminder of what I already own before I get tempted by end of season sales. This is also a great time to donate any sweaters you did not wear yet this season.

Part of your sweater refresh is also maintenance because by mid-season your sweaters might be showing some pilling. Having both a sweater comb and a sweater shaver is helpful. A sweater comb is best for cashmere and fine knits, while a sweater shaver works well for cotton blends, chunky sweaters, and everyday knits. Both are affordable tools that can really extend the life of your wardrobe. If you are only buying one, go with a sweater shaver because it works for most everyday sweaters.

ICYMI…here’s a recap of the monthly closet tips:

  • Great documentary about the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team – perfect to watch between Olympic games.
  • OOTD – casual errands, winter, midsize, over 50
  • Is it Target or Serena and Lilly? My new favorite cordless lamp.
  • How to be cute & warm at a hockey game. Mini Style Fix edition.
  • Vogue article about Olympic fashion.
