How to Choose the Right Midi Skirt for Women Over 50
Let’s talk body type. Women come in all sizes; tall, petite, curvy, straight. Each of us is perfect in our own unique way. However, there are a few tricks to cheat the system. Knowing your basic shape can help you choose a skirt style that maximizes your assets. There are countless body types, we are sharing a few.
The apple shape is characterized by a larger waist and bust compared to the hips; broader shoulders, and a rounder silhouette, especially around the midsection.
A pear shaped body presents a slimmer upper body and wider hips and bottom, creating a triangle.
The hourglass shape is named for its curvy resemblance to an hourglass, where the upper and lower halves are wide and roughly equal, while the waist is more narrow.
A rectangular shape is defined by a straight silhouette with similar width shoulders, hips, and waist, and little to no waist definition.
Choose the Right Length
A midi skirt can fall anywhere between the knee and the ankle. The most flattering lengths are a couple of inches below the knee, just above the swell of the calf, or just below the calf so that a few inches of ankle show. Essentially you want the skirt to end at the narrowest part of your leg. Length is always an issue for those of us under 5’3, as it is for our tall friends, 5’9 and up.
A few pro tips for petites, opt for a skirt that ends at the bottom of your calf muscle or just below the knee, the more leg you show the taller you look. A skirt with a slit will also help with this. Do not be afraid to get things altered. The seamstress is your friend.
You don’t have to be taller than 5’4″ to wear a midi skirt. Mid-length skirts are one of our favorite spring fashion trends, and they’re going to continue well into the fall. From our stylish friends at Glamour Magazine’s “Short Girl’s Guide to Wearing Midi Skirts”.

Fall is all about layers, the days are warm but the evenings are chilly. Pair a leather skirt with a tee shirt and sweater. This cardigan gives the effect of a suit jacket, making this outfit perfect for work or a dinner out. Pair it with heeled loafers for evening or dress it down with Adidas Spezials.
- This is skirt is a literal column giving the effect of height.
- Layer a sweater over your tee shirt for chilly temps, lose the sweater if it warms up during the day.
- Keep an eye on proportions, the skirt is slim so your top should be loose.

Christa’s Midi Skirts
The last time we did this post, I found midi skirts to be very challenging. But once I forced myself out of my comfort zone (and found the right closet staples to pair with them) I now find that a midi skirt is truly one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. It dresses up, dresses down, travels well, and works year round.
And what are those closet staples that made midi skirts work every time? For spring/summer, I pair them with my favorite SCHUTZ block heel sandals and a crips cotton blouse. For fall/winter, I love them with a slim fitting cashmere sweater and classic tall boots. Have fun with the skirt and keep the other pieces classic and simple. And voila! You have an easy formula for getting dressed no matter where you are headed.
And, if you’re still not convinced about midi skirts, many of our style tips work if you swap a great trouser for a midi skirt if that’s more your thing. Or maybe find a dress in similar colors to recreate an outfit you love.

FAQs About Midi Skirts for Women Over 50
What length midi skirt is most flattering for women over 50?
The most flattering midi length typically hits somewhere between just below the knee and mid-calf. The sweet spot is where the skirt creates a long, clean line without cutting you off at the widest part of your calf.
If you’re petite, look for a slightly shorter midi that shows a bit of ankle. If you’re taller, you can absolutely lean into a longer, true mid-calf length. The key is proportion. Pairing your midi with a shoe that shows a little skin at the ankle or has a lower vamp can also help elongate the leg.
What tops work best with midi skirts for a polished look?
Midi skirts are all about balance. Since the skirt has volume or length, a more streamlined top usually works best. The goal isn’t tight. It’s defined. Showing a bit of waist or creating shape keeps the look modern and polished rather than bulky. If you ever feel overwhelmed by fabric, try a front tuck. It’s amazing what that little move can do.
What shoes should I wear with a midi skirt after 50?
For casual days, sneakers are our go-to. They make a midi feel current and effortless. For something more polished, try a low block heel, a sleek sandal, or even a pointed flat. In cooler weather, ankle boots work beautifully, especially with a skirt that shows just a bit of leg between the hem and the boot.
Can women over 50 wear bold prints or bright colors in midi skirts?
Absolutely. In fact, a midi skirt is a wonderful way to wear color or print because it anchors the outfit. If you’re trying a bold print, balance it with a neutral top. If you’re wearing a bright color, keep the rest of your look streamlined and simple. Think one statement piece, not five. The goal isn’t to tone yourself down. It’s to style with intention. If the skirt makes you smile when you put it on, that’s usually your answer.
