How to Transition from Summer to Fall Outfits

What’s a girl to do when the day starts off chilly, but the afternoons leave you feeling warm? You need summer-to-fall outfits — “fall-ish” styles!

You don’t need a whole new wardrobe for this in between fall-ish season. To transition from summer to fall outfits, here are a few tips:

  • As temps cool, add an extra layer like a light jacket, cardigan or sweater coatigan – your denim jacket is your fall-ish hero!
  • Add in fall colors with your shorts, skirts, and even white jeans — on trend this year: chocolate brown, olive green, butter yellow, pepper red and salted caramel. Try some Army green chinos!
  • Swap shorts for a midi skirt or jeans
  • Transition from sandals to flats or booties
  • Switch up your accessories for darker colors or add a light scarf
  • Swap short sleeve dresses for long sleeve dresses – but keep your sandals
  • Change your lip and nail color

The outfits below check many of those transition boxes. Shop your closet first and then add in a few of our pieces to create an easy wardrobe that works for these in between days.

Add Fall Colors Now and Swap Your Shorts for Jeans Later

This top by D Ô E N is perfect to wear now with white/denim shorts, but the copper color makes it great for the fall, too. Pair it later with the Itty Bitty bootcut jeans by Wit & Wisdom — you know we’re fans! As the temps get cooler, continue to extend your outfit through the season by adding an extra layer, like this black jacket by Rails (we’ve shared it in white for summer, but this black is perfect for now).

For a “look for less” blouse, you can also try this one from LOFT and this one by Wit & Wisdom.

Transition Your Army Green Chinos from Summer to Fall Outfits

The Gap Factory Army green chinos have been so popular at SAF this summer that we are transitioning them to fall. Wear them now with sandals, a tank and a straw bag now, and as the days cool down swap your tank for a long sleeve top, switch to a fashion sneaker and add a third piece like this super cute corduroy jacket (a jean jacket would be perfect, too!). Of course, we added a little pop of pumpkin spice with this suede bag.

Take Your White Jeans into Fall with Layers and Accessories

Yes, your white jeans will work this fall! Take them from a classic black and white summer look into the fall by adding a sweater, lighter color booties and a light scarf. For me, my favorite SCHUTZ sandals (but in black) finally get their day as we head from summer to fall. (Not sure why, but I prefer the black pair later in the season and the cork pair all summer.) Swapping out your purse can also help bring your look from summer to fall.

Transition a Slip Skirt from Summer to Fall

Slip skirts are on our radar, we’re seeing them everywhere. Not only are slip skirts easy to transition from summer to fall outfits, they are also easy to transition from casual to dressy. We’ve added layers to our summer tank and skirt by adding a cashmere sweater and a scarf (the third piece that makes this an “outfit”). To elevate this look from casual museum hopping to dinner with friends, change your sneakers to booties and swap your belt bag for a clutch. Ta-da! Slip skirts are the perfect travel piece because they are so versatile.
