Walk and Talk (and a Winter Style Rut)

Stuck in a winter style rut? We hear ya! It’s our walk and talk convo this week because we, too, are getting a little sick of our clothes right now. We’re sharing our favorite tips to help you get back into your fashion groove. We’ve got six ideas, and most of them are already in your closet. With one or two new purchases you can punch up your pre-spring wardrobe and get out of that winter style rut.

MEGAN’S TIPS

I’m moving my pink, cream, light tan and pastel sweaters to the front of my closet and storing my black and gray ones in the back. Just this little shift lightens the mood and your outfit. You may still be wearing wool sweaters, but they will look lighter and brighter.

Time to take off the dark gray/ maroon / black nail polish and lighten up the look with a baby pink. I also like to treat myself to a new lipstick at the beginning of spring. Makes your makeup feel fresh and new.

Some days the weather is crappy and boots are the only answer, but when it’s edging up into the 40s or 50s try a ballet flat or a fashion sneaker.

CHRISTA’S TIPS

Try a new accessory in a spring color. A scarf like the blue one below (under $15) will bring some brighter color closer to your face. A new purse in a spring color will take you all the way to summer — and who doesn’t love getting a new bag! And don’t forget your accessories — some colorful bracelets or earrings will perk up any outfit.

It might be time to do a closet clean out. Put away the clothes you’re tired of (and donate the ones you haven’t worn all winter). This makes it easier to give the pieces you do love the attention they deserve and will help you easily pull together outfits you’ll love again. And if you have an outfit you love, there is no shame in wearing that on repeat — wear what makes you feel good!

“Winterize” your favorite piece from your closet — and it doesn’t have to be a winter piece. If there’s a striped t-shirt you love to wear all summer, pair it with a cardigan. If there is a skirt you haven’t worn in a while, try pairing it with your cashmere crewneck and tall boots. Or try wearing your favorite dress with a denim jacket. Find what you love and make it work for winter.

And see how we’re taking our own advice to break our style ruts!

What We’re Watching

CHRISTA : Mayfair Witches airs every Sunday on AMC. Just add this to the list of supernatural genres that I love to watch! In Mayfair Witches, Rowan (played by Alexandria Daddario) discovers that her birth family comes from a long line of witches, and she’s learning what that means when she meets them in New Orleans.

MEGAN : Christa talked about Servant (Apple TV) last year here and here, I guess it took me a while to catch on. This is not the typical show that I watch, it feels a little bit Stephen King-ish which is usually not my jam. But something about episode one hooked me. Maybe it was the nanny they hired for their fake baby? No more spoilers, ya gotta watch.

What We’re Listening To

MEGAN : Do you have an Alexa in your kitchen? I do, and lately I’ve been using her to play music while I’m cooking or doing dishes. My favorite thing is tell Alexa to play “Yacht Rock”. So good, you will know ALL the words! Pro tip: Our stylish friend, Jessica and I were talking about playing music with Alexa and she said she told hers to play “Love Songs” on Valentine’s day. Love this idea for ANY day.

Something We Are Organizing

MEGAN : I know you had to double check that this was written by Megan, but I too have caught the spring cleaning and organizing bug! As I settle into my new kitchen I’ve found a few chaos spots. One was my spice drawer. A quick search on Amazon had my wheels spinning. I ordered this spice organizing kit and WOW! It’s so much neater, easier to find what I’m looking for and I can fit more spices in my drawer. The whole project, cleaning out old spices (ummm, why did I have spices that expired BEFORE MY SON WAS BORN??), pouring them into the new bottles and labeling them took one hour. Seriously. I had been putting this task off for weeks and it was one hour. Now I know my die hard organizer girls will want me to alphabetize them too…maybe next week?

Something for the Guys

MEGAN : Guys get in a style rut, too! Especially if they work from home and don’t have to put on their office uniform. My husband has been wearing this Peter Millar quarter zip on repeat. It looks great on a zoom call (or the golf course!), feels like a sweatshirt, and doesn’t have to be dry cleaned. Perfect spring transition layer for the fellas.

Stuff You Need From Amazon

CHRISTA : A $4.29 manicure? You bet we all need that!! Look at these gel-like nails. (I’m wearing the “sandbox” color.) These are NOT the press-on nails from our younger days. These actually work. Ladies, trust me! It’ll be the best 5 bucks you spend on Amazon EVER!

And trust our stylish friend Georgi on the shore– “They’ve lasted for a week so far through skiing, working out, tennis, etc.”

Save vs. Splurge

MEGAN : This one is a little more “the look for less.” I love both of these straw? raffia? bags. Perfect for spring and summer. Anyone going somewhere warm for spring break? You definitely need this.

They’re mini sizes of some of the best-selling Sephora products, and it’s a great way to find what you need without making an investment in full-size products. These make great gifts, too!

Pro tip #1: The mascara set includes a voucher for a free full-size mascara.

Pro tip #2: The perfume sampler includes a scent certificate to redeem for a travel size of your favorite featured fragrance at no extra cost.

And, sale alert at Sephora: Sephora is having “buy 1 full-size mascara, get 1 at 50% off” right now — ends 2/18.
