It’s a fall fashion three way! On Tuesday, we shared some of our favorite new finds for fall. Which leads us to today! We’re sharing 3 ways to style one piece from that collection, giving you lots of fall and winter outfit inspiration.
We created three outfit collages showing three ways to style one new piece for fall. Everything in the outfit collages is current. While we’d love to buy it all, that’s not realistic (you’re welcome, husbands!). So, we also styled the same piece three ways with mostly items we already had in our closets. It’s our interpretation of the one item three ways. By adding one new piece and shopping your closet you should have at least three new outfits. Don’t forget to shop your closet ladies, there are treasures in there — we know!
Be sure to follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see how we styled our pieces IRL.
Christa’s 3 Ways to Style a Ruffle Tie Neck Top (from Ann Taylor)
This blouse is such a versatile fall (and winter) piece, and it was so easy to find 3 ways to style it. This color is perfect for fall/winter. I can pair this top with all of my jeans, coated denim and black pants. I can layer it with a my camel winter coat, my black coated denim jacket, a cardigan or even my jean jacket. Because it’s short sleeves, I can wear it now on its own and wear it later as a layer.
Style 1: Thanksgiving Dinner
I’m trying to stretch my wardrobe, buy more thoughtfully, and look for pieces that mix and match well. This blouse checks those boxes! Plus, it has feminine details, and the satin fabric makes it dressy when you need it to be. (Love the AT and LOFT “mixed media” blouses for their versatility.)
AND, friends, let’s give a nod to those shoes. Totally out of my comfort zone but I.LOVE.THEM! They have a 3.25″ heel, but with the 1″ platform they are really comfortable and easy to walk in. Can’t wait to wear them! I bought them in brown and then ordered the black – thinking I’d send back the brown – but I love them both! I’m wearing the brown in my pic below.
Style 2: Cocktail Party
If you don’t have a pair of black pants in your closet that you love, you should make that to your top priority for new purchases. And these should be the first pair you try! If I could wear these every day, I would – they are seriously as comfortable as pajamas! I almost didn’t buy them thinking I’m too heavy and too short for the wide leg…bit I am so glad I gave them a try.
Swapping your jeans for black pants instantly changes the blouse to something dressier. With a pair of black pants, you can go anywhere! Wit & Wisdom from Nordstrom is my #1 pick for black pants, whether it’s these new wide leg version or their classic trouser (both have their slimming “Ab”Solution technology, just like the Itty Bitty boot cut jeans we all love).
Style 3: Parents’ Weekend
Ladies, if you are only updating one pair of shoes this fall, let it be a new pair of flats. Flat shoes for fall are definitely trending. If you are looking for a shoe update, clogs, ballet flats, penny loafers and mary janes are the shoes to have. I love the square toe and texture of the black flats below from Sam Edelman — the details take an ordinary flat and elevate it.
How Christa Styled Her Blouse
I picked this blouse because of the color and the fit. I am also at that age where I am always feeling warm, so I wanted short sleeves but for the fall. This blouse checked those boxes, and it’s a great quality from Ann Taylor. It’s easy to wear now, but can also be worn later as a perfect layering piece.
When you find a blouse you love, any of these looks can easily be recreated with pieces from your closet. Try your favorite denim with a pair of heels, black pants for a night out, add a jacket you love, or layer under a cozy cardigan.
If you saw the jacket in our New Fall Finds post this week, you know I have this same jacket in black from Ann Taylor last year, so I decided to send it back. Obviously I love the style and fit since I already own it, but I don’t think I need two that are basically the same. Maybe someone can convince me that the plum is worth the investment before I send it back!
Megan’s 3 Ways to Style a Short Sleeve Lady Jacket
J.Crew is the retail Queen of the lady jacket and this short sleeved riff is no exception. Styling this jacket (it’s really a sweater material) three ways was easy. If you are going to add one thing to your fall closet I vote for this. Other ways to wear it, (not shown here) include: over a black slip dress or with a slip skirt, with white jeans as we all start to dress like fall but it still feels like summer, with a black pencil skirt, army green cargo pants and a white tee, and lastly with a distressed boyfriend style denim and ballet flats (feminine meets masculine).
Style 1: Girls’ Weekend in NYC
I bought these Gap pleather (vegan) jeans (always under $90 and frequently on sale) last year on sale and they instantly updated my wardrobe, giving suburban mom slash cool girl vibes. Here I’ve styled them with the conservative short sleeve lady jacket. Is this a mullet outfit? Conservative on the top and party on the bottom. If I were in NYC with my girls, I’d wear this during the day with platform sneakers (or Sambas) and a casual bag. Switch the shoes to pumps and add a clutch and you’re ready for dinner at Balthazar.
Style 2: In Person Meeting
Do in person meetings even exist anymore? Well, if they did, this is what I’d wear. These Wit and Wisdom black pants are my go to, they are comfortable — like I could wear them on the airplane comfy. Paired with black pumps, my lady sweater and a lady bag, and I’m ready for any corporate challenge. Or a school mom wine night.
Style 3: Book Club / Wine Club / Supper Club
Jeans, a tee shirt and clogs is a typical everyday outfit for me. But throwing on the short sleeve lady jacket elevates my look (it’s the third piece!). You could swap the clogs for loafers or ballet flats and still be chic and comfortable.
How Megan Styled Her Jacket
This jacket basically styled itself, you can add it to ANY neutral outfit and it works. It can be dressed up or down. Wear it as an extra layer or a third piece. Pro tip: For those of us that are running hot in our own micro climates these days, the short sleeve lady jacket is the perfect weight AND keeping your arms bare helps you stay cooler.
